I recently bought a new cookbook and I am in love. Yes, I am a geek and I often have a word love affair with my books. The book: The Homemade Pantry 101 Foods You Can Stop Buying &Start Making by Alana Chernila.
Not ones to let butter and eggs sit in the refrigerator, we have cracked the book open and we are exploring the pages. Tuesday night we made Macaroni and Cheese with the optional broccoli added. For Wednesday night, I made Lentil Soup with the vegetable stock from scratch. Lilly and Phoebe made the Graham Crackers. Okay, before everyone starts thinking, “Well, isn’t she just the happy little domestic,” first, I am happy most days ( it’s a lot more enjoyable and a deliberate choice) and second, I really like to bake and cook, to create. And third, of course, some days there is a whole lot of fun chaos going on behind the scenes. After all, I don’t hang the little ones up on coat racks until I am finished with my projects. They are usually right there in the mix of it all, speeding through the kitchen on a scooter leaving trails of flour around the house and taking strands of grated carrots in their hair with them.
We have been on a quest for the past year to eat healthier, to put in our bodies more food made from the ground and not sold in boxes. Most days we do fairly well and we enjoy the hunt for a new recipe. Of course there are many days we set this eating adventure aside, but usually for something special, like when The Root Beer Stand in Sharonville, OH opens for the season on March 25th. We will be there for our first-of-the-season homemade root beer and a Timmy Dog. If you ever visit us during the open season of The Root Beer Stand you will likely find yourself bellied up to the bar waiting for a scrumptious slurp and a taste.
For those of you interested, as described in a review by Roadfood.com, “The Timmy Dog” is a foot-long extravaganza piled with chili, cheese, chopped raw onions, cole slaw, sauerkraut, mustard, ketchup, relish and hot sauce (I leave the hot sauce off mine). Our family motto in regard to stepping out on our home-grown menu, “If we are going to go bad, we are going straight to the good stuff. And it definitely needs to taste good.” But I digress. Graham crackers.
The graham crackers are delicious !
No more graham cracker boxes in the recycle bin at our house, we will be making this tasty snack ourselves. We took a few pictures for you during the learning process and had a lot of fun! Enjoy!Follow me!
