Sometimes we have dreams; we have just forgotten them

I was talking to my son this morning when he proudly announced he didn’t have any dreams last night. I explained that he most certainly did have dreams; he had just forgotten them. I told him, “Everybody dreams; we just don’t always remember them when we wake up. Sometimes we need to make a conscious effort to remember our dreams.”
It occurred to me that we do that a lot when we are awake as well – forget our dreams. Many days I have listened to my children dream big about who or what they are going to be when they grow up. The list is endless: fireman, police officer, ballerina, actor, artist, chef, comic book writer, dancer, singer, and on and on the dreaming goes. The sky is no limit to their abilities and imaginations.
Somewhere along the way, we allow our dreaming to become clouded, squashed down, erased. Living life and people living life with us begin to whisper in our ears harsh realities. The why nots, the you will needs, the you can’ts and the many other expressions of negativity we like to call realism.
This morning I was reminded I don’t ever want to be too old to dream. I want to remember the wonderful, exciting ideas of my mind. Are they different from when I was 10, 20, 30 and gasp, yes, 40? Of course. Is the truth of what I can do with those dreams shaped by my life choices and circumstances in life? Absolutely! But who knows which day one of those whimsical thoughts, hopes and desires might just become my reality. I might wake up and be living my dream. In many, many ways, I already am.
Wake up and dream with me today!
